Blog

A blog is the abridged version of the term “web log” and can be maintained by individuals, groups, or communities. Entries are typically added to allow for dialogue among individuals. Blogs can serve as a forum for casual or scholarly commentary.

Thousands of teachers have begun to implement blogs as a forum for communication in classes for active learning. Blogs allow students to give feedback to one another and for the teacher to monitor communication.-- Emily K.

RSS

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. It is a device that helps readers find updates to content on websites without having to search for the revision. RSS tracks changes made on a page and attaches the change to the text and images. This eliminates the need for the readers to check for updates as they are shown on the page. RSS feeds can be viewed with an RSS reader, many of which are free. -Nicole

Social Bookmarking

Social bookmarking is a means to store, organize, search and manage bookmarks of webpages on the Internet. Examples of popular websites that assist in bookmarking is Del.icio.us  and Flickr. Tagging is a method to “tag” or asign a relevant keyword or term associated with a picture or information. It is also an informal way of bookmarking. -Genda

Photo Sharing

Photo sharing is the publishing or transfer of a user's digital photos online, thus enabling the user to share them with others (whether publicly or privately).-Wikipedia

Through photo sharing, people are able to upload or share photos/images through a website or online database.

Places for photo sharing include Facebook, MySpace, personal blogs, websites, etc.

The user must be familiar with how to upload a photo and how to edit the photo if necessary

(i.e. if a photo is displayed upside-down the user must know how to flip the photo).

Teachers can use photo sharing to share pictures/images with their students that relate to a certain topic. This might help students visualize the idea and better understand the concept. Students can also share photos with each other in order to promote technological literacy.-- Steph

Podcasting

Podcasts are a series of digital-media files that are distributed over the Internet. They are syndicated feeds that are played back on MP3 or other portable players or on a computer.-- Wikipedia definition.

Podcasts are audio knowledge programs that are repeated serially for listeners to learn from and enjoy. Linda's definition

PodFans can learn how Podcasts work by following the wonderful tutorials that are online.

PodFans can subscribe to their favorite podcasts and can have these podcasts downloaded automatically when a new series is added. Anyone can create a Podcast: a radio show, school lessons, audio tours, conference meetings. Even kids can create Podcasts.

iTunes has over 100,000 Podcast episodes; thousands are free, so teachers can either create their own Podcasts or get one that will work in their classrooms. Subscriptions can be from HBO, NPR, ESPN, NYT, etc.

Podcasts are categorized, summarized, reviewed, and rated.

Podcasting, either making or listening, is an excellent teaching/learning tool for anyone to try! -- Linda E.
